The establishment of Red Cross day was made on the due date of birth anniversary of Henry Dunant. Each year on 8th of May world red cross day is celebrated.
Currently around the world, there are 190 national red cross and Red crescent societies
Henry Dunant was the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC). It’s an annual celebration of the principles of red cross and Red crescent movement. In 1863, Henry duant and other 4 men in Geneva established the international committee for relief to the wounded. It was established in the year 1919.

The Indian Red Cross Society was founded in India in 1920 and the review of the Red Cross as a symbol of human service in India like the whole world. India was also part of the 1949 Geneva Convention in which the symbol of the Red Cross and Red Crescent was announced to be used in the Army Medical Service.
The Geneva Convention was signed by the Government of India in 1950, 30 years after the formation of The Indian Red Cross Society in India. 10 years after this, the Indian Parliament passed the Geneva Convention Act of 1960 to enforce some of the rules of the 1949 Geneva Convention in India as well.
The fourth section of the same Act also provides for punishment on misuse of the sexes of the Red Cross, about which you are reading in the next post.

This day is dedicated to paying the tribute to the volunteers for their fantastic contribution to the people in need.
The basic principles of world Red cross day are:

- Voluntary.
- Universality.
- Unity.
IFRC has more than 97 million staff, members and volunteers. Many types of health check ups and also blood donation camps are organized by the volunteers of red cross. 80% of the blood donations given to the red cross are collected at mobile blood donation camps.
The IFRC has its own disaster relief emergency fund, approximately $15 M per year. It raised just $3 Billion for relief for the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami victims.
In 2016, IFRC treated more than 10.2 Million Patients and Fed more than 8.7 Million people. Attacking red cross medical personnel, vehicles or building during war is considered as a war crime..
