History of World Table Tennis Day

Table tennis, also called ping pong, originated during Victorian England where it was originally played as a parlour game. The term “ping-pong” was used as a catchy phrase by the company J. Jaques & Son Ltd and hence was trademarked by them. Table tennis didn’t become a competitive sport until 1988 when the summer Olympics started. Table Tennis has since honed in its rules when the 2000 Olympics in Sydney when they implemented rules for players to join for competition, and now organizations like the International Table Tennis Federation formed and took table tennis to a whole new level.

In India, the sports enthusiasts started playing table tennis in an organized way, right from the establishment of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) in Calcutta (the present day Kolkata) in 1937. TTFI is an active member of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), which was established in 1926. TTFI played an important role in upbringing the standard of table tennis in India. Since its establishment, it has operated actively for over a decade, to promote and improve the status of table tennis in India. A number of quality Indian table tennis players were produced by the strenuous efforts of TTFI.

Chetan Baboor was the poster boy of Indian Table Tennis for quite some time, especially in the 1990s. Apart from his national titles, he won a couple of medals at the Commonwealth Games. Chetan was the only entrant from India in Men’s at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games but never managed to get past the first hurdle at the mega event. He reached a career-high rank of world number 68 before he called it a day in 2004.
In India, the count of talented table tennis players is not less. The country is blessed with some of the most talented players, then may it be Manika Batra or Sharath Kamal. The Indian paddlers had a breakthrough 2018, where they won big at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
